Product warranties, workmanship warranties and insurance policies answer different questions. Clarify their scope before you need them.
Read scope, not just duration
Identify the issuer, coverage, exclusions, maintenance duties and claim procedure. Ask whether labour, removal, accessories and consequential damage are included or excluded. OPC guidance recommends obtaining a contractor’s voluntary warranty in writing. Other legal protections cannot be summarized by a marketing sentence on a proposal.
Keep usable records
Keep the contract, approved changes, invoices, installed products and detail photographs together. Add maintenance visits and work by other trades. If a problem appears, record the timeline and contact the relevant parties. Organized records help describe facts without prematurely assigning cause or responsibility.
Ask your insurer the right questions
Ask what protection your policy provides, what evidence is required and how to report temporary measures. A leak, weather event and wear do not automatically lead to the same decision. A roofer can document observations; claim acceptance and compensation depend on the insurer and policy. Do not commit to work assuming guaranteed reimbursement.

Your questions
Does a longer warranty prove a better roof?
Read it alongside its conditions and covered system. Compare duties, exclusions and remedies, then the assembly and documented work quality.
