Two membranes of the same colour may need very different connections. Identifying the system is the first step in choosing a repair product.
Find the correct specification
Look for invoices, the original proposal, product information and warranty documents. Mention earlier repairs, especially those involving several materials. If no reference is available, have the membrane identified on site. A label on a retained roll can help but does not prove the whole roof uses that system.
Compare connections
EPDM is synthetic rubber; seams use system-specific products and methods, including tapes from some manufacturers. PVC and TPO are distinct thermoplastic families, typically heat-welded. This does not mean PVC can be welded directly to TPO. Adhesives, cleaners and accessories must be approved for the intended application.
Assess the assembly, not just the tear
A localized repair may work if the surrounding area is sound and allows a reliable connection. Also identify the cause: traffic, equipment, movement or a detailing defect. Wet underlying layers must be considered. Ask what the repair covers and what remains outside its scope.
Colour is not enough to select a repair
| What to find | Why it helps | If information is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer and product | Identify the family and applicable documentation. | Look for invoices, plans, warranties and markings available to contractors. |
| Age and repairs | Identify mixed materials or previous treatments. | Document different areas before preparation. |
| Detail needing work | A seam, penetration and parapet require different details. | Request a repair scope described by location. |
| Validated method | Check specified cleaning, primer, accessory and assembly. | Confirm compatibility; do not assume a product is universal. |
Prepare for your project
- Membrane reference and repair history
- Compatible products and substrate preparation
- Cause addressed and written repair limitations
Your questions
Can advertised lifespan decide the choice?
An advertised lifespan does not describe your roof’s condition. Compare assemblies, constraints, details and written warranties rather than a single average.
